Banned in Toys, Allowed in School Supplies

The CHEJ has produced another excellent report: Hidden Hazards: Toxic Chemicals Inside Children’s Vinyl Back-to-School Supplies.

Seventy-five percent of the supplies that were tested had elevated levels of toxic phthalates. They included Disney, Spiderman, and Dora branded items such as backpacks and three-ring binders.

Such high levels would make these items illegal if they were toys.

Phthalates in vinyl products are linked to asthma, birth defects, ADHD, diabetes, and learning disabilities, making it extremely important that we choose PVC-free products for our children.

Children spend hours each day in the classroom. Wouldn’t you feel better if that room was PVC-free? Please share CHEJ’s 2012 Back-to-School Guide to PVC-free School Supplies with teachers and other parents.
