Sweet William’s birthday cake was topped with a pure beeswax candle from Big Dipper Wax Works. You can order number candles and traditional birthday candles directly from Big Dipper’s site, or from ecomom.
We avoid paraffin candles because they release toxic benzene and toluene when burned. Paraffin candles are as dangerous to the lungs as secondhand cigarette smoke. Who would want them on their baby’s birthday cake?
Beeswax candles are a great alternative. Make sure they are 100% beeswax, not mixed with paraffin.

I'm a writer and the mother of William and Fergus. Before dedicating my work to children's environmental health, I earned an MA in Cultural Reporting and Criticism from New York University and was a photography editor at The New Yorker. My family is preparing to move to New Orleans, where my husband, an architect, is building us a non-toxic home.
