Before Sweet William’s arrival, I began researching the safety of baby products that would soon fill our home, from bottles to toys to furniture. I was disheartened by the number of items containing potentially dangerous chemicals, including known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors.
I never guessed it would take hours — even days — to find items guaranteed to be free of these chemicals. But safe products do exist, and I think it’s because parents demand them. Our power to protect our children lies in what we choose to purchase. When manufacturers and retailers conform to what their customers will buy, it’s possible to get safer products on the shelves. Have you noticed that most baby bottles are now BPA-free? It’s not because of government regulation.
William is almost ten months old. As his world expands, my job to make it safe remains a challenge. I hope our experiences can help other parents buy wisely for their babies.
